    Paul has been Head of Alternative Investments since 2004. This boutique is responsible for the group’s investments in infrastructure, private equity, impact investment and mezzanine debt. He chairs the Alternative Assets Investment Committee and has served on the boards of African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Assore, African Clean Energy Development, CIT, J&J, Life Healthcare, Metcash, Mezzanine Partners, Old Mutual Investment Group, Pepkor, Tourvest and Pembani. He also chaired Green Hands, Old Mutual Investment Group’s Social Development Forum, for 10 years.

    Paul’s entire career has been involved in investment and capital markets. His previous work experience includes serving articles with Deloitte in Johannesburg where he qualified as a chartered accountant. He then spent 7 years as an investment banker at Investec.

    Paul joined Old Mutual in 1995. He spent five years as the Portfolio Manager of the Old Mutual Life Funds (at the time a US$50 billion portfolio and the largest balanced mandate in the country) and three years as Head of Investment Views, formulating the investment house view and model portfolio for Old Mutual Investment Group. Over these periods, the Life Funds and fully discretionary balanced funds, respectively, delivered top quartile performance.

    Karin joined the Alternative Investments boutique in May 2010 as Chief Operating Officer. She is responsible for maintaining and improving the boutique’s operating capabilities, ensuring that an adequate control and risk function is in place and project managing major business initiatives such as product development and business planning.

    Her background enables her to bring her extensive knowledge of asset management operations, IT environments and general best practice solution management to the fore.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, she was employed as Institutional Chief Operating Officer at STANLIB Asset Management. Karin has 14 years of relevant operational, financial and project management experience within the financial services industry.

    Doug joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments, part of the Old Mutual Investment Group, in September 2015 as Head of Investor Relations. Doug is responsible for engaging with investors and advisors regarding the Group’s Infrastructure, Private Equity and Development Impact Funds.

    Doug’s background enables him to share the benefits of over 20 years of experience in developing and managing clients’ investments across South African and international investments, both listed and private.

    Doug started his career at Investec Asset Management in 1996. While at Investec Doug gained extensive experience in active management across a diverse client base, including pension funds, medical aids, insurance companies and collective investment schemes. He was appointed as Director of the business and was responsible for institutional business development and managing strategic client relationships.

    In October 2003 Doug joined investment firm Brait to grow its Fund of Hedge Funds proposition and establish a client base. In 2008, this role became a group-wide role for Private Equity, Credit, Fund of Private Equity Funds and single Hedge Funds. In 2012 Doug left Brait to establish a third-party capital-raising business for a network of hedge funds. In 2014 Doug joined RECM, a specialist Value Manager.

    Zom joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments as the Head of the Impact Funds team in 2018. He is responsible for executing the business unit’s long-term strategy while taking into account OMAI’s ambition to expand its African footprint. Impact Funds manages assets used to fund affordable housing, access to quality education and promoting SMME businesses.

    Over the last 3 years, Zom has been the Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual West Africa where he has led the current early stage roll out of the Old Mutual brand and client solutions in the retail and corporate markets in Ghana and Nigeria. In this role, he has also been central to the strengthening and growth of Old Mutual strategic bancassurance partnership with Ecobank.

    Prior to this, Zom worked for Old Mutual Zimbabwe which he joined in 1999 and he spent the majority of his time in the asset management business whose portfolio included Listed Equities, Interest Bearing Assets, Property and Private Equity. His experience also includes property management and property development projects covering various sectors. Prior to joining Old Mutual, Zom worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Zimbabwe.

    Leon joined the Development Impact Funds team from Old Mutual Investment Group's central credit team, where he was a Credit Analyst. His responsibilities include investigating and concluding new transactions, managing existing transactions, and assuming overall responsibility for administration and governance functions within the team. Leon’s diverse background enables him to bring his credit and financial management skills to the fore.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, he was a credit analyst at CA-Ratings and Moody's for seven years. In addition, Leon has fifteen years of work experience as Financial Manager and Financial Director in medium-size private companies.  CLOSE

    Ettienne joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments in May 2014. As the Head of Business Development for the Impact Funds business, Ettienne is responsible for the development, capitalisation and operationalisation of new funds. In this role, he has set up the Old Mutual Retirement Accommodation Fund (a development finance and investment fund focusing on senior living in South Africa), Urban Impact Properties Limited (the scale residential rental portfolio of the Housing Impact Fund South Africa) and is currently setting up the Old Mutual African Impact Real Estate Fund (a scale housing development fund focusing on East and Southern Africa).

    Before joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Ettienne was responsible for the Joint Ventures business of Standard Bank Real Estate Investments in the Western Cape. Prior to Standard Bank, Ettienne was a Key Accounts Manager at ABSA Commercial Property Finance / Barclays Property Finance and an analyst at an unlisted property fund. Before embarking on his career in real estate finance and investment, Ettienne worked as a management consultant.

    Ettienne has a total of 15 years of experience in the real estate finance and investment industry and 3 years as a management consultant.

    Byron joined Old Mutual Investment Group in September 2012, initially as a Deal Implementation Specialist. He was then appointed as an Investment Professional in October 2014. His primary responsibilities entail the origination, analysis and due diligence of residential property investments and thereafter the management of the debt and/or equity investments, including board representation.

    Byron’s background enables him to bring his investment analysis, credit risk, financial management and asset management skills to the fore.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Byron was a Transaction Manager and Product Controller at Investec Bank and a Securitisation Manager at Standard Bank. He completed his articles at PwC after which he spent a year working in the US.

    Byron has 14 years of work experience with exposure to investment analysis, asset management and financial management.

    Cheryl joined Old Mutual Alternative Investment in February 2016 and is part of the Impact Funds team. Apart from managing various aspects of the development process on affordable housing projects, one of her primary roles is to assess the sustainability of new developments, especially with regards to urban planning and quality of environment.

    Prior to this, Cheryl worked as a development project manager for an affordable housing developer. Prior to that she spent over 20 years in the architectural field, mainly in residential housing, where one of her key roles was to identify solutions for the creation of quality yet affordable housing models. 

    Cheryl brings with her over 10 years of experience in the affordable housing industry and believes strongly in the creation of developments that are sustainable on all levels.

    David joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI) in 2017. As part of the Impact Funds team, he is responsible for managing the draw process of the Greenfields Development Company and facilitating the monthly claims from developers. He also acts as the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) representative on some developments as well as providing technical construction advice.

    Prior to joining OMAI, David worked at Group Five Construction for five years as a quantity surveyor on primarily government projects. His time was spent mostly in the tendering and implementation of construction projects managed by the Department of Public Works.

    In 2016 David worked as a researcher focusing on future construction prices for the University of Cape Town. David is currently studying a MPhil in Construction Management and, in his own capacity, operates a social development company with a few partners.

    De Wet joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments in February 2013 as a Deal Financial Manager.

    In 2015 he joined the greenfields team and is currently managing a portfolio of residential development assets, which includes strategic and operational decisions relating to these projects and their funding structures. 

    He brings with him operational experience at deal and project level together with a wide range of experience in the credit environment. De Wet also has significant experience in low-income housing and working in a financial management environment.

    Before joining Old Mutual Alternative Investments, he was employed by Mettle for six years, managing various departments and projects.The projects included the liquidation of a debtor book securitisation structure and recovery of a home loan debtor book which was in default.Prior to that De Wet did his accounting articles at LDP Inc.

His primary responsibility is origination, analysis and execution of projects of the fund.

    Gavin’s background in Real Estate Finance and Corporate Banking enables him to bring extensive knowledge of the property industry to new business origination and project analysis.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, he was employed as a Property Finance Manager at Standard Bank in the   Real Estate Finance Division, as well as a Credit Manager in the Corporate Banking Division.

    Gavin has over 15 years of relevant management experience within the property market and financial services industry.

She has extensive work experience in the finance industry as a client care manager, business analyst and portfolio operations manager. Prior to joining the Old Mutual Investment Group, she was a business analyst at the Industrial Development Corporation.

    Jason joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments in July 2015. Prior to that he was a senior associate in the commercial litigation department at Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys. Jason is an admitted attorney, with 13 years of experience in the commercial legal sphere. Jason is a deal implementation specialist in the Impact Funds team and carries out the various legal aspects of deals,  from the due diligence phase through to the actual deal implementation. This includes the drafting and settling of various legal agreements, the provision of legal advice, the consideration of legal agreements, the drafting of opinions, the drafting and finalisation of resolutions, the administration process regarding the setting up of companies, and miscellaneous company secretarial matters.

    Kgothatso is a member of the team managing the Schools and Education Investment Impact Fund of South Africa (Schools Investment Fund). The Fund is the first education impact fund in South Africa and was launched in 2011 to address education infrastructure backlogs and support the improvement of education in the country.

    Kgothatso is responsible for originating and managing investments in the Schools Investment Fund.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Alternative Investments, he worked within the corporate finance teams of two international companies, namely Macquarie and Rothschild. In his time in corporate finance Kgothatso worked across various sectors and was involved in advising on a number of transactions, ranging from capital raising, mergers and acquisitions and Black Economic Empowerment.

    Lala joined Old Mutual Investment Group in June 2010. As a member of the Development Impact Funds team, she is responsible for the Schools and Education Investment Impact Fund South Africa and the School and Education Grant Fund.

    Lala has over 20 years of experience in South Africa and other African countries on management and implementation of development programmes in various sectors. She is a strategic problem solver and driver of the design and implementation of programmes that contribute to growth and development. Her first job was as an English second language teacher in a township school in the 1980s. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s she worked in the NGO sector against forced removals and on land and housing issues. In 1995, she joined the Mandela government as a Senior Manager for the National Department of Land Affairs. Thereafter, she worked as a sustainable development consultant.   CLOSE

    Lynn joined Old Mutual Alternative Investment in 2017 as part of the Impact Funds team. Her role includes the implementation and management of new and existing residential development projects within the Housing Impact Fund South Africa (HIFSA) portfolio.

    Lynn was previously an asset manager at the Public Investment Corporation and managed a Gauteng-based portfolio of commercial and industrial properties to optimise their value and enhance returns.

    Prior to this, she spent three years as a property and asset manager at FNB, where she managed a portfolio of commercial and residential properties across South Africa. Lynn also spent two years in the property management team at the Eris Property Group.

    Nithin graduated from the Old Mutual Chartered Accountant Training Programme (OMCAT) at the end of 2016. As a result, he got the opportunity to work within various business units – including Central Finance, Internal Auditing, Accounting and Investments – within both Old Mutual Life Assurance Company of South Africa and Old Mutual Investment Group during his three-year training period.

    Shanaaz joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI) as part of the Impact Funds team in September 2017. Her role involves systems and process improvement initiatives, improving efficiencies and cost savings by optimising finance functions and roles. She also manages the integration and structure of the external and internal finance teams to ensure business objectives and strategy are adequately and effectively met. In addition, she reviews budgets and does financial reporting for the division.

    Prior to joining OMAI, Shanaaz worked at Old Mutual Property (OMP), where her core responsibilities were to ensure that OMP’s interest in public-private-partnership (PPP) businesses is operating as intended and is in line with the underlying PPP agreements. Coupled with that, she was responsible for the financial management of the SPV that houses the property portfolio of R1.2 billion as well as the Africa Investment business.

    Shanaaz has over 23 years of post-articles experience in property, retail, investments and the medical aid sector.     Thurston joined Old Mutual Investment Group in March 2013 as an Investment Professional within the Impact Funds team. With his extensive investment experience across Africa, he joined principally to expand the team’s investments across the rest of the continent. In addition, he has also been involved in the management of the business’s rental property investments in South Africa.

    His main responsibilities encompass origination, analysis and due diligence of projects/investments of the business’ funds as well as managing the implementation, performance and exits from the funds. 

    Thurston’s extensive experience investing in various asset classes across Sub-Saharan Africa means that he brings with him an understanding of working across the continent that is second to none.

    Before joining Old Mutual Investment Group, he completed his MBA at Oxford University’s Said Business School and did corporate finance consulting. Prior to that, he spent three and a half years as Vice President and Senior Investment Analyst at Renaissance Asset Managers’ Africa Multi-Strategy Fund based in London. He also worked as a Senior Executive in Ernst & Young’s London Private Equity Advisory Division. Before moving to London, Thurston worked at Investec Asset Management analysing South African, Botswana and Namibian companies. He completed his articles at PwC.

    Jacci was appointed as the Head of Old Mutual Private Equity (OMPE) in May 2013 and oversees the strategic direction and operational running of the business.

    He is also actively involved in all the investment decision-making processes and is a member of the OMPE Investment Committee. In addition to assuming responsibility for the overall private equity programme, he retains portfolio responsibility for certain investments and currently serves on the boards of several investee companies as well as the advisory boards of several private equity funds.

    Jacci served his articles with PriceWaterhouseCoopers before joining Anglo American’s Corporate Finance division in 1999 for two years. He then worked with Old Mutual’s Corporate Finance division for 5 years before moving to OMPE as a Portfolio Manager in February 2005.

    Jacci has degrees in accounting and is a Chartered Accountant. He has 19 years of industry experience and 12 years in private equity investments.

    He is also the founding Chairman of Fun Learning for Youth, a non-profit organisation providing academic support to high school learners from disadvantaged communities to enable them to gain entry into university.

    Chumani has degrees in business science and accounting and is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst. Chumani has 11 years of experience in private equity investments.

In addition to this, Lance is responsible for the South African Fund of Funds programme, and has overseen due diligence and investments in a number of private equity funds.

    After leaving Stellenbosch University, he worked for two years in Sydney, Australia, for Colonial First State, supporting diversified venture capital and private equity transactions as an Analyst. He returned to South Africa in 2002, where he worked for Pamodzi Investments for four years as the Executive for Corporate Finance.

    Lance has degrees in economics and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Lance has 15 years of industry experience with 10 years in private equity investments.

In 2006 Mohsin joined the Alternative Investment team as Deputy to the CFO, working across the Private Equity, Infrastructure and Development fund teams.

    Mohsin has degrees in accounting and a master’s degree in finance.

    Nabeel joined Old Mutual Investment Group’s Alternative Investments in March 2015 as an Investment Professional within the International Private Equity team. Nabeel’s responsibility is to originate, analyse, execute and manage investments, for the various funds, within the International Private Equity business.

    Nabeel’s experience in entrepreneurship, debt structuring and mergers and acquisitions compliments the current team’s skill set and enables him to focus on critical issues in formulating an investment recommendation.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Nabeel spent some time as an entrepreneur before joining one of the big four audit firms where he audited some of the largest companies in South Africa. He then went on to gain further experience in investment banking specialised finance, at one of the big four banks, where he was responsible for debt transactions across leveraged finance, project finance and balance sheet lending. After his experience in the debt environment, Nabeel joined the mergers and acquisitions team in Deloitte’s Corporate Finance Advisory business, where he advised on transactions across various industries.

    Nabeel has over 10 years of financial services and operational experience.

    Leon joined the Alternative Investments boutique in April 2007, as a member of the International Private Equity team, where he has been instrumental in implementing the organisation of the OMIGSA International Private Equity Funds of Funds.

    He forms part of the advisory team that makes investment recommendations to the fund, and is involved in the monitoring of the fund’s investments. Leon also advises the fund in respect of its financial operations and reporting.

    Leon’s work experience started with completing his articles at Deloitte & Touche in Johannesburg. Thereafter, he worked in the Corporate Finance division of UAL Merchant Bank for nine years, advancing to General Manager. During this time, he advised listed companies regarding mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and fundraising.

    He was involved in direct private equity investing from 1996 to 2006 with entities such as New Africa Advisors, Gensec Bank and Absa Capital. There he gained valuable experience in making private equity investments, post-investment management of private equity investments, structuring private equity funds, restructuring of investments and exiting from investments. During this time he served on the boards of directors of a number of companies.
