    Paul has been Head of Alternative Investments since 2004. This boutique is responsible for the group’s investments in infrastructure, private equity, impact investment and mezzanine debt. He chairs the Alternative Assets Investment Committee and has served on the boards of African Infrastructure Investment Managers, Assore, African Clean Energy Development, CIT, J&J, Life Healthcare, Metcash, Mezzanine Partners, Old Mutual Investment Group, Pepkor, Tourvest and Pembani. He also chaired Green Hands, Old Mutual Investment Group’s Social Development Forum, for 10 years.

    Paul’s entire career has been involved in investment and capital markets. His previous work experience includes serving articles with Deloitte in Johannesburg where he qualified as a chartered accountant. He then spent 7 years as an investment banker at Investec.

    Paul joined Old Mutual in 1995. He spent five years as the Portfolio Manager of the Old Mutual Life Funds (at the time a US$50 billion portfolio and the largest balanced mandate in the country) and three years as Head of Investment Views, formulating the investment house view and model portfolio for Old Mutual Investment Group. Over these periods, the Life Funds and fully discretionary balanced funds, respectively, delivered top quartile performance.

    Her background enables her to bring her extensive knowledge of asset management operations, IT environments and general best practice solution management to the fore.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, she was employed as Institutional Chief Operating Officer at STANLIB Asset Management. Karin has 14 years of relevant operational, financial and project management experience within the financial services industry.

    Doug joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments, part of the Old Mutual Investment Group, in September 2015 as Head of Investor Relations. Doug is responsible for engaging with investors and advisors regarding the Group’s Infrastructure, Private Equity and Development Impact Funds.

    Doug’s background enables him to share the benefits of over 20 years of experience in developing and managing clients’ investments across South African and international investments, both listed and private.

    Doug started his career at Investec Asset Management in 1996. While at Investec Doug gained extensive experience in active management across a diverse client base, including pension funds, medical aids, insurance companies and collective investment schemes. He was appointed as Director of the business and was responsible for institutional business development and managing strategic client relationships.

    In October 2003 Doug joined investment firm Brait to grow its Fund of Hedge Funds proposition and establish a client base. In 2008, this role became a group-wide role for Private Equity, Credit, Fund of Private Equity Funds and single Hedge Funds. In 2012 Doug left Brait to establish a third-party capital-raising business for a network of hedge funds. In 2014 Doug joined RECM, a specialist Value Manager.

    Jurie was appointed as the Head of Infrastructure and Development Impact Funds in 2007. The division includes the African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) joint venture with Macquarie Bank (which manages the SAIF, AIIF, KEIF, AIIF2 and Apollo Funds), the IDEAS Managed Fund, the Development Impact Funds and the International Infrastructure Fund. In addition to his management role, he is actively involved in the management of the IDEAS Managed Fund’s assets and represents the fund on various boards.

    Since the beginning of 2001, Jurie has been involved in various roles in the Infrastructure and Development Impact Funds division of the Alternative Investments boutique. This includes the analysis, assessment and execution of infrastructure and development property projects, the ongoing asset management of investments, portfolio management of the IDEAS Managed Fund and board representation on various investee company boards.

    Jurie joined Old Mutual Investment Group as an Equity Analyst in September 1999 before joining the Infrastructure team.  After completing an accounting conversion course at UCT, he served articles with KPMG on various audits, tax advisory work and secondment to major clients on corporate finance assignments. Jurie started his working career at Murray and Roberts, as a civil engineering contractor on various road, bridge and bulk concrete projects.

    Tom is currently responsible for the appraisal, analysis, and portfolio management of infrastructure and development assets for the Old Mutual Group.

    He is Chairman of the African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), a company jointly owned by Old Mutual Investment Group and Macquarie Bank, which manages a range of infrastructure funds. He is a Director of Setsing Financial Services and the Community Growth Management Company, both asset management companies.

    He is chairman of the N3 Toll Concession Company and a director of Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concession Company, Railway Systems (Zambia), New Limpopo Bridge and Rainprop.

    Tom has six years' experience as a consulting civil and structural engineer and 27 years' investment experience with the Old Mutual Group – including eight years investment experience in sub-Saharan African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Reshma worked at Ernst & Young in the Transaction Advisory Services department for five years. In her role as a senior manager, she specialised in business and asset valuations, financial due diligence and transaction advisory. Reshma completed her articles in the auditing department after which she travelled on secondment to the Ernst & Young Atlanta and Amsterdam offices.

    Lebogang was part of the Old Mutual Graduate Accelerated Programme (GAP Programme) for over a year where he spent the majority of his time with MacroSolutions and the Portfolio Implementation teams in Old Mutual Investment Group. Here he was exposed to investment analysis and portfolio management relating to multi-assets.

    Christine joined Old Mutual Investment Group in July 2006. As a member of the Alternative Investments boutique, she is responsible for originating and managing the Development Impact Fund. Christine brings with her an understanding of low-income housing and micro-finance. She believes strongly in the ability to obtain both a social impact and a commercial return.

    Before joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Christine was a consultant for five years. Prior to that she was Managing Director of CashBank, and its predecessor The Group Credit Company (GCC), for 13 years. Before joining GCC, Christine was involved primarily in squatter upgrading strategies with the Urban Foundation for around five years, and ran a manufacturing business for 10 years. Christine has an invaluable 24 years of work experience in low-income housing and an additional 10 years’ experience in managing a small business.

    Lala has over 20 years of experience in South Africa and other African countries on management and implementation of development programmes in various sectors. She is a strategic problem solver and driver of the design and implementation of programmes that contribute to growth and development. Her first job was as an English second language teacher in a township school in the 1980s. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s she worked in the NGO sector against forced removals and on land and housing issues. In 1995, she joined the Mandela government as a Senior Manager for the National Department of Land Affairs. Thereafter, she worked as a sustainable development consultant.   CLOSE

    Thurston joined Old Mutual Investment Group in March 2013 as an Investment Professional within the Impact Funds team. With his extensive investment experience across Africa, he joined principally to expand the team’s investments across the rest of the continent. In addition, he has also been involved in the management of the business’s rental property investments in South Africa.

    His main responsibilities encompass origination, analysis and due diligence of projects/investments of the business’ funds as well as managing the implementation, performance and exits from the funds. 

    Thurston’s extensive experience investing in various asset classes across Sub-Saharan Africa means that he brings with him an understanding of working across the continent that is second to none.

    Before joining Old Mutual Investment Group, he completed his MBA at Oxford University’s Said Business School and did corporate finance consulting. Prior to that, he spent three and a half years as Vice President and Senior Investment Analyst at Renaissance Asset Managers’ Africa Multi-Strategy Fund based in London. He also worked as a Senior Executive in Ernst & Young’s London Private Equity Advisory Division. Before moving to London, Thurston worked at Investec Asset Management analysing South African, Botswana and Namibian companies. He completed his articles at PwC.

    Byron’s background enables him to bring his investment analysis, credit risk, financial management and asset management skills to the fore.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Byron was a Transaction Manager and Product Controller at Investec Bank and a Securitisation Manager at Standard Bank. He completed his articles at PwC after which he spent a year working in the US.

    Byron has 14 years of work experience with exposure to investment analysis, asset management and financial management.

In January 2010 she joined the Development Impact Funds team and is responsible for investment and operations support function within the team.

    Prior to Old Mutual Investment Group, Collene was the Financial Manager of Sanlam Private Equity, having joined in 2005. Here she was responsible for the full financial, administrative and operational activities of the business.

    Collene began her professional career after completing her articles with Grant Thornton International, later joining Sanlam Employee Benefits in 2000 as an accountant. She also worked at Tellumat Manufacturing in 2002, as a Financial Accountant.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, he was employed as a Property Finance Manager at Standard Bank in the   Real Estate Finance Division, as well as a Credit Manager in the Corporate Banking Division.

    Ettienne joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments in May 2014. As a member of the Impact Funds team he set up the Old Mutual Retirement Accommodation Fund and was responsible for the restructuring and recapitalisation of the residential rental portfolio of the Housing Impact Fund South Africa. Ettienne is responsible for the development and capitalisation of new funds within the Impact Funds team.

    Before joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Ettienne was responsible for the Joint Venture business of Standard Bank Real Estate Investments in the Western Cape. Prior to Standard Bank, Ettienne was a Key Accounts Manager at ABSA Commercial Property Finance / Barclays Property Finance and an analyst at an unlisted property fund. Before embarking on his career in real estate finance and investment, Ettienne worked as a management consultant.

    Ettienne has a total of 14 years of experience in the real estate finance and investment industry and three years as a management consultant.

    Kgothatso is a member of the team managing the Schools and Education Investment Impact Fund of South Africa (Schools Investment Fund). The Fund is the first education impact fund in South Africa and was launched in 2011 to address education infrastructure backlogs and support the improvement of education in the country.

    Kgothatso is responsible for originating and managing investments in the Schools Investment Fund.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Alternative Investments, he worked within the corporate finance teams of two international companies, namely Macquarie and Rothschild. In his time in corporate finance Kgothatso worked across various sectors and was involved in advising on a number of transactions, ranging from capital raising, mergers and acquisitions and Black Economic Empowerment.

    Lenore joined Old Mutual Investment Group in November 2013 as an Investment Professional with a focus on rental housing developments within Old Mutual Alternative Investments’ Impact Funds team. Her responsibilities include origination, analysis, due diligence, execution and management of residential property investments.

    Lenore has been leading the implementation of EDGE, a green building certification system developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, on new housing developments, as part of the Environmental Social Governance (ESG) initiatives within Old Mutual Alternative Investments. The EDGE standard requires a 20% reduction in energy consumption, water use and embodied energy in materials (20/20/20) as compared to typical local building practices.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Lenore worked for over five years as an investment banker in Project Finance for Standard Bank in London and Johannesburg. Her gained experience there includes origination, structuring debt and equity instruments, risk analysis, due diligence and implementation of transactions, including loan syndication with various commercial banks and development finance institutions for projects in emerging markets in Europe and Africa. Before joining Standard Bank, she worked for two years as a process engineer for Fluor Daniel Southern Africa performing capital cost estimates and designing large processes for industrial clients.

    He brings with him operational experience at deal and project level together with a wide range of experience in the credit environment. De Wet also has significant experience in low-income housing and working in a financial management environment.

    Before joining Old Mutual Alternative Investments, he was employed by Mettle for six years, managing various departments and projects.The projects included the liquidation of a debtor book securitisation structure and recovery of a home loan debtor book which was in default.Prior to that De Wet did his accounting articles at LDP Inc.

    Jason joined Old Mutual Alternative Investments in July 2015. Prior to that he was a senior associate in the commercial litigation department at Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys. Jason is an admitted attorney, with 13 years of experience in the commercial legal sphere. Jason is a deal implementation specialist in the Impact Funds team and carries out the various legal aspects of deals,  from the due diligence phase through to the actual deal implementation. This includes the drafting and settling of various legal agreements, the provision of legal advice, the consideration of legal agreements, the drafting of opinions, the drafting and finalisation of resolutions, the administration process regarding the setting up of companies, and miscellaneous company secretarial matters.

    Jacci was appointed as the Head of Old Mutual Private Equity (OMPE) in May 2013 and oversees the strategic direction and operational running of the business.

    He is also actively involved in all the investment decision-making processes and is a member of the OMPE Investment Committee. In addition to assuming responsibility for the overall private equity programme, he retains portfolio responsibility for certain investments and currently serves on the boards of several investee companies as well as the advisory boards of several private equity funds.

    Jacci served his articles with PriceWaterhouseCoopers before joining Anglo American’s Corporate Finance division in 1999 for two years. He then worked with Old Mutual’s Corporate Finance division for 5 years before moving to OMPE as a Portfolio Manager in February 2005.

    Jacci has degrees in accounting and is a Chartered Accountant. He has 19 years of industry experience and 12 years in private equity investments.

    Jacci serves on the boards of the following companies and funds: Actom, Consol, Primedia, Morecorp and the Advisory boards of Actis III and Ethos V and VI as well as Brait IV.

He returned to South Africa in 2002, where he worked for Pamodzi Investments for four years as the Executive for Corporate Finance.

    Lance has degrees in economics and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Lance has 14 years of industry experience with 10 years in private equity investments.

    James is responsible for International Private Equity and Africa investments, a division of the Alternative Investments boutique of Old Mutual Investment Group.

    James’ key responsibilities include fund structuring, asset allocation and asset selection for a number of portfolios. Investment activities cover the broad spectrum of listed stocks, real assets and foreign currency denominated portfolios. James heads two global private equity funds of funds focused on US, Europe and Emerging Markets as well as an Africa-focused private equity fund of funds. He is a member of the Alternative Investments’ Asset Investments Committee, its Risk Committee and Asset Management Committee.

    He also manages a number of venture capital private equity interest focused on the UK, Israel and East US. James is also a member of various offshore private equity funds’ advisory boards and a director of Dublin-listed OMIGSA Alternative Assets Plc. In Africa, he manages a US$100 million Sub-Sahara listed equity portfolio on behalf of Old Mutual South Africa. The fund returned 13.3% p.a. (in USD) over 10 years to end December 2013. Total assets under James’ management as at 31 December 2013 were R7.5 billion

    Following a spell as a researcher at the Unit for Futures Research, (Stellenbosch University), James started his investments career in May1978 as an Investment Analyst (industrials) at the investment division of Old Mutual Life Assurance Company of South Africa. This division became Old Mutual Asset Managers and later Old Mutual Investment Group. In 1983, he was appointed Senior Investment Analyst, responsible for the valuation of quoted and unquoted equities, the co-ordination of equity research, broker liaison and broker research evaluation. In 1985 he was promoted to portfolio manager responsible for Old Mutual’s portfolios in Kenya, Malawi, and unlisted assets in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

    In addition to portfolio management, he shared executive responsibility for the establishment − and acquisition/sale − of a number of Old Mutual associated asset management companies in Africa and held board positions at Old Mutual Kenya, OMAM Zimbabwe, OMAM Botswana and OM Properties Namibia. Until a few years ago he also had executive responsibility for Old Mutual Malawi’s investment and asset management operations, managing life and third-party pension funds. In that function, he held directorships of MSE listed Press Corporations, National Bank of Malawi, Malawi Property Investment Company, Packaging Industries Malawi and Telecom Networks Malawi as well as unlisted companies Malawi Telecom, First Discount House and various property companies. He sat on a number of Audit Committees of these listed companies.

    Leon joined the Alternative Investments boutique in April 2007, as a member of the International Private Equity team, where he has been instrumental in implementing the organisation of the OMIGSA International Private Equity Funds of Funds.

    He forms part of the advisory team that makes investment recommendations to the fund, and is involved in the monitoring of the fund’s investments. Leon also advises the fund in respect of its financial operations and reporting.

    Leon’s work experience started with completing his articles at Deloitte & Touche in Johannesburg. Thereafter, he worked in the Corporate Finance division of UAL Merchant Bank for nine years, advancing to General Manager. During this time, he advised listed companies regarding mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and fundraising.

    He was involved in direct private equity investing from 1996 to 2006 with entities such as New Africa Advisors, Gensec Bank and Absa Capital. There he gained valuable experience in making private equity investments, post-investment management of private equity investments, structuring private equity funds, restructuring of investments and exiting from investments. During this time he served on the boards of directors of a number of companies.

    Nabeel’s experience in entrepreneurship, debt structuring and mergers and acquisitions compliments the current team’s skill set and enables him to focus on critical issues in formulating an investment recommendation.

    Prior to joining Old Mutual Investment Group, Nabeel spent some time as an entrepreneur before joining one of the big four audit firms where he audited some of the largest companies in South Africa. He then went on to gain further experience in investment banking specialised finance, at one of the big four banks, where he was responsible for debt transactions across leveraged finance, project finance and balance sheet lending. After his experience in the debt environment, Nabeel joined the mergers and acquisitions team in Deloitte’s Corporate Finance Advisory business, where he advised on transactions across various industries.

    Nabeel has over 10 years of financial services and operational experience.
